Israel has initiated a significant military operation in the Gaza Strip, named Operation Gideon’s Chariots, aiming to dismantle Hamas’s military and administrative capabilities and to secure the release of hostages held by the group. The operation commenced on May 16, 2025, following the collapse of a ceasefire agreement in March.
The Israeli government has outlined two primary objectives for this offensive:
Elimination of Hamas’s Infrastructure: The operation seeks to destroy Hamas’s military and governing structures to prevent the group from exerting control over Gaza.
Rescue of Hostages: Israel aims to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages taken during the conflict that began in October 2023.
The offensive has intensified the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The United Nations warns that approximately 14,000 infants are at risk of death within days due to severe shortages of food and medical supplies. Although Israel has permitted limited humanitarian aid into the region, the volume remains significantly below pre-war levels.
Casualty reports indicate that over 53,000 Palestinians have died since the onset of the conflict, with more than 16,200 children among the fatalities. Recent airstrikes have resulted in at least 55 additional deaths in a single night.
Israel’s actions have drawn increasing international criticism. Allies such as the United Kingdom, France, and Canada have urged an immediate cessation of hostilities and the full resumption of humanitarian aid. The European Union is reviewing its trade agreements with Israel, and the UK has suspended ongoing trade negotiations.
U.S. President Donald Trump has also expressed frustration with the continued military operations, advocating for a diplomatic resolution through indirect talks mediated by Qatar. Despite these efforts, ceasefire negotiations have yet to yield tangible results.
Domestically, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces mounting pressure. His far-right coalition partners oppose concessions, including increased humanitarian aid, threatening the stability of his government. Simultaneously, international isolation and potential sanctions pose significant challenges to Israel’s foreign relations.
The situation remains volatile, with ongoing military operations exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and diplomatic tensions. The international community continues to call for an immediate ceasefire and the initiation of meaningful peace negotiations.
